The Mind of a Thief by Patti Miller
JUDGES' COMMENTS
The Mind of a Thief is a memorable account of a personal journey into Wiradjuri history and politics in the Wellington region of mid-western New South Wales. Though not a conventional work of history, it is written with style and empathy, conveying a strong sense of place, identification and reconnection.
Largely autobiographical in character, it takes us on a fascinating journey of someone who becomes a historian; in the process, the importance of historical understanding and empathy is revealed.
While this is primarily a book about the lived experience of historical events, it deftly incorporates original historical materials through both interviews with the Wellington community and an interrogation of nineteenth century Aboriginal mission records.
