This account by one of our best-known actors is an achievement that way transcends the category of celebrity memoir. Magda Szubanski’s story begins with her father’s role as a Polish resistance fighter (the ‘assassin’), the secrets that came with him to his new home in Australia, and her determined search for how those secrets permeated and shaped her life. Scenes play out from life in the suburbs to the glittering theatrical agencies of America, all carefully scrutinised by the author for clues to help her – and us – understand how to make a “reckoning” of the past. This is an inspiring memoir, rich and generous in what it shares with the reader. It draws together big themes of war, grief, migration and resettlement and weaves them into a more personal searching. Reckoning is a timely book, revealing with startling clarity how oppressive it was for this talented actor to grow up in fear of revealing her sexuality. Strong, entertaining and challenging, Reckoning is a beautiful memoir.
