The father of comedy’s first printed edition

The father of comedy’s first printed edition

Comoediae novem, 1498

by Aristophanes, edited by Marcus Musurus
printed by Aldus Manutius in Venice

Aristophanes’ caustic comedies satirising all aspects of life won prizes when first performed in ancient Athens, and were praised for their style by Renaissance worthies. They are still studied as texts and enjoyed in performance today. This is the first printed edition, emanating from the major printer of Italy’s main hub of printing in the first century of printing. For four centuries its typeface influenced the production of Greek type and its editorial matter provided our only source of the classical commentaries it transmitted.
