Are you looking for something to keep the kids busy during the holidays?
Discover playful spaces, creative workshops and lots of free activities for the whole family at Australia’s oldest library!
1. Free adventure tours
Discover priceless artefacts, artworks and animals – and that’s just the ones starting with the letter ‘A’. 11am-11.45am weekdays, from 13 to 24 January.
2. The magical Mitchell
3. The Family Room
Drop in and enjoy books, toys, puzzles and dress-ups. Look out for the cheeky budgies and see if you can find the secret Library mouse house. This space is specifically for preschoolers!
4. Treasure chest
Play a game of I Spy in the Collectors’ Gallery — it’s stacked with thousands of fascinating treasures from the Library’s underground stacks.
5. Follow the Trail
Pick up a 'Follow the Trail' activity booklet from the info desk and explore the Library.
6. Drop-in Activity Centre
There’s all sorts of art and craft, fun and games planned for the holidays. No need to book, just show up. Cost: $5. 9am-3pm weekdays, from 13 to 24 January.
7. Chat to Scout
Say hello to our little robot friend! Answer a few simple questions and Scout will give you a list of books to read in the new Children’s Library.
8. The Children’s Library
Wind your way through this beautiful maze-like space brimming with thousands of children’s books. Kids will love curling up in the comfy reading nooks.
9. Pop-up art-making
Jump right in for a quick and colourful drawing activity in our paintings gallery. You’ll get to create your own masterpiece to take home. Free, 12noon-12.45pm weekdays, from 13 to 24 January.
10. Kids' picks
Enjoy an audio tour of the Paintings from the Collection exhibition, created for kids by kids.
11. Get lost in stories
Look Edward the Emu in the eye and dress up in Murgatroyd’s Garden in our Stories in the Sun display.
The State Library is located on Sydney’s Macquarie Street, just a short walk from Hyde Park, The Royal Botanic Gardens and the Art Gallery of NSW. The Library’s amenities are family-friendly. View opening hours and plan your visit.
