Exploring aspects of layout and design

Shaun Tan has used a diagonal line throughout the story as part of his layout. This line represents eternal time – with time moving in both directions forever. View the sketchbook pages in which Shaun Tan developed this layout:

Compare the layout in the two sketchbook pages with the final picture book Dog. Look at each thumbnail from the sketchbook next to the relevant page from the book. Talk to a partner about what is the same, and what is changed.

Engage in a class discussion about the use of diagonal lines to show the passing of time. Consider the following question:

  • Is a diagonal line in the picture book Dog better than using a straight horizontal line – as used in traditional timelines?

Discuss whether Shaun Tan made the right choice in his layout design.
