Your students can already read the words in picture books but can they ‘read’ the pictures? Find out how to decode the mysteries of visual literacy as we explore beautiful illustrations from Australian picture books.
Curriculum Outcomes
Stage 2
English
- EN2-8B Identifies and compares different kinds of texts when reading and viewing and shows an understanding of purpose, audience and subject matter
- EN2-10C Thinks imaginatively, creatively and interpretively about information, ideas and texts when responding to and composing texts
Creative arts
- VAS2.1 Represents the qualities of experiences and things that are interesting or beautiful by choosing among aspects of subject matter
- VAS2.3 Acknowledges that artists make artworks for different reasons and that various interpretations are possible
- VAS2.4 Identifies connections between subject matter in artworks and what they refer to, and appreciates the use of particular techniques
Stage 3
English
- EN3-8D Identifies and considers how different viewpoints of their world, including aspects of culture, are represented in texts
Creative arts
- VAS3.1 Investigates subject matter in an attempt to represent likenesses of things in the world
- VAS3.4 Communicates about the ways in which subject matter is represented in artworks
