Discover the amazing stories behind some of Australia’s most iconic and quirky collection items and gain another view of the country’s rich history and culture. Sharpen your students' source analysis skills with a close-up look at some iconic and quirky collection items from Australia's oldest library. You will record your answers on a cardboard brick, which you can then use to reconstruct the Mitchell building. Source analysis has never been so much fun.
In this 1 hour program students will:
- view primary sources from the State Library collection
- develop their source analysis skills
- record their responses in a unique format
Curriculum Outcomes
Stage 2
History:
- HT2-3 describes people, events and actions related to world exploration and its effects
- HT2-4 describes and explains effects of British colonisation in Australia
- HT2-5 applies skills of historical inquiry and communication
English:
- EN2-4A uses an increasing range of skills, strategies and knowledge to fluently read, view and comprehend a range of texts on increasingly challenging topics in different media and technologies
- EN2-2A plans, composes and reviews a range of texts that are more demanding in terms of topic, audience and language
Stage 3
History:
- HT3-1 describes and explains the significance of people, groups, places and events to the development of Australia
- HT3-2 describes and explains different experiences of people living in Australia
- HT3-3 identifies change and continuity and describes the causes and effects of change on Australian society
- HT3-5 applies a variety of skills of historical inquiry and communication
English:
- EN3-1A communicates effectively for a variety of audiences and purposes using increasingly challenging topics, ideas, issues and language forms and features
- EN3-3A uses an integrated range of skills, strategies and knowledge to read, view and comprehend a wide range of texts in different media and technologies

Minimum Supervision Ratio
Kindergarten – Year 2 - 1 adult per 5 students
Year 3 – Year 6 - 1 adult per 10 students
Secondary students - 1 adult per 20 students
