Closely examine works from 10 of Australia's most important artists. This interactive, highly engaging workshop will take place the Paintings from the Collection exhibition, which features more than 300 works from the Library's collection. Designed as a cross-curricula activity which can be tailored for the audience, the basic program develops critical and visual literacy skills, can serve as an inspiration for art making or writing, and provides a different way to explore Australia's history.

CURRICULUM OUTCOMES

English:

  • EN4-1A responds to and composes texts for understanding, interprestation, critical analysis, imaginative expression and pleasure
  • EN4-5C thinks imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically about information, ideas and arguments to respond to and compose texts
  • EN4-8D identifies, considers and appreciates cultural expression in texts

History:

  • HT4-1 describes the nature of history and archaeology and explains their contribution to an understanding of the past
  • HT4-5 identifies the meaning, purpose and context of historical sources
  • HT4-6 uses evidence from sources to support historical narratives and explanations

Visual Arts:

  • 4.7 explores aspects of practice in critical and historical interpretations of art
  • 4.8 explores the function of and relationships between the artist - artwork - world - audience
  • 4.9 begins to acknowledge that art can be interpreted from different points of view

English:

  • EN5-1A responds to and composes increasingly sophisticated and sustained texts for understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, imaginative expression and pleasure
  • EN5- 5C thinks imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically about information and increasingly complexideas and arguments to respond to and compose texts in a range of contexts
  • EN5-8D questions, challenges and evaluates cultural assumptions in texts and their effects on meaning

History:

  • HT5-1 explains and assesses the historical forces and factors that shaped the modern world and Australia
  • HT5-5 identifies and evaluates the udefulness of sources in the historical inquiry process
  • HT5-6 uses relevant evidence from sources to support historical narratives, explanations and analyses of the modern world and Australia

Visual Arts:

  • 5.7 applies their understanding of aspects of practice to critical and historical interpretation of art
  • 5.8 uses their understanding of the function of and relationships between artist - artwork - world - audience in critical and historical interpretation of art
  • 5.9 demonstrates how the different frames provide different interpretations of art
