Mitchell Library Reading Room is now open

The transformation of the Mitchell Library Reading Room is almost complete! 

Our aim was to return this beautiful public space to its former glory. On your next visit you will notice striking new woollen carpet and that the stairs (installed in the 1980s) leading down to the Dalgety walkway have been filled in. We will now be able to provide much-needed additional seating for readers.

Work to improve access into and around the Library continues. We're creating:

• an accessible entry into the Mitchell building 
• a new accessible link between the Mitchell and Macquarie St buildings
• a new ramped access route to the Macquarie St building.

Update on opening hours

From Monday 7 March, our Reading Room opening hours will be extended as follows:

• Monday to Thursday: 9 am to 8 pm (Special Collections area to close at 6 pm)
• Friday: 9 am to 5 pm
• Weekends & public holidays: 10 am to 5 pm (Special Collections area closed on Sundays)
