Next Door: photographs of Sydney’s suburban life in the 90s

Thursday 1 September 2016

The State Library of NSW’s new photographic display – Next Door by Paul Blackmore – provides a ‘neighbourly’ peek into Sydney’s suburban lives from the 1990s.

Featuring 20 evocative black & white images from the Library’s collection, the display – opening today – is being presented as part of History Week, with the 2016 theme being ‘Neighbours’.

For photographer Paul Blackmore, capturing the suburban experience was really important having spent much of his career documenting people in their environment. When the Library began acquiring his works from the late 1990s, there were representations of beach and bush, but the suburban environment was lacking.

“We celebrate our lives through ritual and religion in the suburbs, often in our backyards,” says Mr Blackmore.
