Congratulations to Richmond-Upper Clarence Regional Library and Tamworth City Library, this year's winners of the LIAC Centre of Excellence Award! The Award was presented at a dinner at Parliament House on Thursday 13 October 2016.
Richmond-Upper Clarence Regional Library's Law Week objective was to raise awareness that libraries provide free, up-to-date, relevant, and easy to understand legal information. To achieve this, the Library promoted the Find Legal Answers service at the annual Casino Beef Week celebration. This 10-day event attracts tens of thousands of visitors from rural NSW.
The Library distributed promotional material and legal information brochures, displayed the plain language legal books available in all NSW libraries, and provided information on a range of subjects including environmental law and neighbour law. By taking the Library’s legal resources into the community, the Library was able to reach a much larger number of people, including those from remote areas of NSW.
Tamworth City Library tailored their Law Week program to the multicultural community. After consultation with community groups including Multicultural Tamworth, the Library held an event Legal information for Tamworth's multicultural community. Local legal service providers delivered legal information talks on issues relevant to the multicultural community, including driving, tenancy and employment. Providing targeted information to this community is of particular importance in Tamworth, as it is a resettlement area for new immigrants and refugees.
Tamworth City Library also had an information booth in their foyer during Law Week, staffed by Fair Trading NSW and Legal Aid NSW. Over 100 questions from the community were answered during the week. The information booth strengthened the existing relationships between the Library, Fair Trading and Legal Aid and has led to the establishment of a regular information booth in the Library, staffed by Fair Trading.
Congratulations to both winning libraries!
