The Piano Forte program is a community education program that deals with the issue of elder financial abuse
The aim of the program is to educate people about elder financial abuse.
The program consists of a film screening and panel discussion with legal and community service representatives. It takes two hours to deliver, including a tea break. The film shows a performance of the play Piano Forte, which highlights the subtle way elder abuse can occur, in addition to exploring the role and responsibilities of an Enduring Power of Attorney. The program is a partnership between the State Library of NSW, Legal Aid NSW, Seniors Rights Service and other legal assistance agencies including community legal centres.
The Piano Forte program was first introduced in NSW public libraries for Law Week 2018. The Law Week events were very successful, with comments from participating libraries including:
- it definitely led to new partnerships and other event opportunities
- the customers really enjoyed the film and they had a great discussion
- everyone found the panel discussion very insightful and engaging
- I think using video as a medium to deliver legal information is great
The program is available for libraries to host at any time of the year. It is suitable for older people, their carers, friends and other family members. Local community, health and aged care service workers may also attend.
To host the program, complete the expression of interest.
You will then be contacted by Legal Aid NSW who will work with you to finalise the date and other details. Note that while all expressions of interest will be considered, acceptance is dependent on the availability of Legal Aid NSW staff.
Reporting and evaluation
Piano Forte is an evaluated program and host libraries are asked to complete an evaluation.
