Seller, 1670?] eng Includes engraved coloured and mounted t.p. and portraits of Englands famous discoverers. Several blank leaves at the beginning and end of the volume, including that on which the t.p. is mounted appear to have been added as part of a later repair. Each folio of the text begins a division of the atlas. Each map is a separate folio, engraved and with blank back. All but the first are coloured. Map 57 is imperfect, wanting the left hand page. except for three by Seller and one by R. Morden, the maps are from various Dutch publishers, notably 22 by F. de Wit, 20 by Visacker and 9 by J. Jansson. The Dutch maps are all in Latin except 13 which is in Italian. Three maps bear dates 1651 on map 13, 1656 on map 9 and 1664 on map 16. In an ed. in the British Museum, with attributed date 1676? the map titles are mainly in English and similarly for later editions in the Library of Congress. The engraved t.p. is apparently from two plates, the outer frame being the same as that used by Seller for various marine atlases, 1607? and later. This ed. was therefore probably pub. somewhere in the first half of the 1670's. According to R.V. Tooley, Maps and map-makers, p. 53, "The Atlas Terrestris varies as to its contents, no two copies I have examined agreeing as to the number or identity of the maps." "A Venise Chez Francois Santini, rue Ste. Justine pres la dite Eglise." A 'view from space' of the earth's hemispheres; the hemispheres selected are the maritime and terrestrial hemispheres, or 'water' and 'land' hemispheres. This map is quite rare in having the land and water hemispheres as the main subject; these are usually supplementing polar or equatorial views of the world. Probably from Paolo Santini's Atlas Universel, between 1776 and 1781. Includes 350-word commentary on why the oblique south polar and north polar views were chosen. The terrestrial hemisphere, we are told, is not centred on Paris and the Paris meridian purely for patriotic reasons, but according to scientific principles. Abounding in seals and elephants [cartographic material]. Smith, William,1790-1847. cartographic 1820. eng Relief shown by hachures. "Note: The tracks of the Brig are said to be laid down from a well regulated Chronometer." Previously undocumented pen and ink chart of South Shetland Islands with ink wash coastal views. William Smith sighted this land on Feb. 17th 1819 on his voyage from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso. Sailing later from Montevideo, he sighted the land on 15th October, and on Oct. 17th landed and claimed the land for the Crown. Only then was he believed by Captain Shirreff, the Commanding Officer in the Pacific. Shirreff refitted and commissioned the Williams, which sailed under Edward Bransfield to accurately survey the discoveries on 19th Dec. 1819. Smith was a part-owner of the brig (named Williams as three of the partners had the same first name). The armed tender was paid off on 16th April 1820 by Capt. Searle (PRO Adm. 51/3012), who removed all charts and journals of the Navy's exploration. The Mitchell Library's copy is similar to the chart by Henry Foster, Midshipman, H.M.S. Creole, dated 'Jan. 1820' and now at UK HO s. 90/3 Shelf Aa1. It is unlikely to be by Smith, and is preceeded by Foster's. Where Foster says "The tracks are laid down by a well regulated Chronometer", this copy reads "The tracks of the Brig are said to be laid down by a well regulated Chronometer". Both Smith (in his log, and later in his Memorial to Admiralty) and Foster have the island at "A" bearing E 1/2 S 7 leagues (PRO Adm. 1/2548), unlike the 17 leagues on the Library's copy. There is also a variation at "H" (Nelson's Islands in Foster, Nelsons Heads or Islands in Library's copy). Map of the Antarctic Ocean produced for the Whalers' Assurance Association, Sandefjord, and printed by the Norwegian Geographic Surveying in 1932. Shows areas of Norwegian exploration by 'konsul' Lars Christensen. Underscored depth soundings are by the Norvegia's Antarctic Expedition; depths and heights in metres. Surface currents under and over 1/2 knot speed are marked by arrows. These ocean currents influence the flow of the nutrients for whales, and were therefore important to whalers like Lars Christensen, the heir of Christen Christensen's whaling company. His captains discovered and surveyed new land on the Queen Maud and MacRobertson Land coasts. Lars Christensen expeditions in the ship Norvegia (1929-30 and 1930-31) followed Norway's annexation of Bouvet Island (1927) and resulted in the annexation of the Peter I. Island (1929). The map set was donated to Mitchell Library in Dec. 1932 by the Hvalfangernes Assuranceforening of Sandefjord, Norway. Lars Christensen mentions this map in his book "Such is the Antarctic": 'Everything of a purely geographical and hydrographical nature that was seen and investigated during my expeditions has been incorporated in the form of fresh maps of the Antarctic. R.(Leslie Russell),1890-1918. Australasian Antarctic Expedition(1911-1914) cartographic [1913] eng Relief shown by contours and spot heights. Map of the topographic survey which commenced on 22 October 1911, when the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) team of five landed on Macquarie, the main objective being establishment of radio station to relay between Antarctica and Australia. Leslie R. Blake was the cartographer and geologist in the team. Blake's map remained the most accurate survey during the twentieth century, as it rains, snows or hails 308 days a year on the island, precluding remote sensing. Blake's main contribution to AAE as a geologist and cartographer on leave from the Geological Survey Dept., Brisbane was the topographical survey on foot and by sea, and description of the island's geology. He collected rock specimen, and photographed royal penguins who breed only on Macquarie Island. (A royal penguin egg collected and signed by Blake October 20, 1912 is now in Aberdeen University' Zoology Museum.) A Chart of the Great Pacific Ocean as described by Mr. Bankes and Dr. Solander in the year 1772." Acquired in 2008 from the Captain James Cook Collection of Robert and Mary Anne Parks ("Captain James Cook, the greatest discoverer : the Robert and Mary Parks collection / Hordern House Rare Books 2008"). Maps from Cook's first voyage were first published in 1773, and the east coast of New South Wales was first shown on Dunn's world map published in November 1772. In February 1772 Banks commissioned from John Bayly an engraving of a section from Dalrymple's 1770 chart 'The Great Pacific Ocean' given to Banks with Dalrymple's 'An historical collection of the several voyages and discoveries in the South Pacific [?]. Retaining Dalrymple's scale, design, and dimensions, the chart was the first one printed to show Cook's discoveries in New Zealand and the east coast of New South Wales. The chart was intended for Banks' use on his next voyage of exploration with Cook. Eventually Banks withdrew, mounting an expedition to Iceland instead. Fifty copies were printed on French paper, and fifty on thinner paper. Until recently, the sole known copy was the Library of British Museum's, printed on lighter paper. Mitchell Library's copy differs from strikes pulled from the original engraved plate after 1975 by having 'New South Wales' named wholy within the south polar projection ("The Banks/Cook portfolio" edited by Pamela Gilbert ; with essays by Harold B. Carter and Andrew C.F. David, p. 108). Exhibited: "Finding Antarctica" at the State Library of NSW, 2011 Located in Framed Pictures Store. Supervised access only by appointment with Maps Section. Sayer, No. 53 Fleet Street, [between 1772 and 1775?] eng Title from box label. Engraved double-hemisphere map of the world, with outline hand-colouring, mounted on wood and backed with paper, dissected into 62 pieces to form a jigsaw puzzle. Housed within the original oak box with sliding lid bearing a printed paper label, key map with publisher's details mounted on reverse, and the number '62' in ink. Map measures 38 x 69 cm. "The first recorded dissection of the world has generally been accepted as Spilbury's, which Hannas dates as circa 1772, however some recent research has discovered an example created in the late 1760s. Robert Sayer was a noted publisher of maps, he was succeeded by Laurie and Whittle who purchased the firm in the 1790s. In 1775 Sayer advertised that any of his 63 single sheet maps 'may be dissected, on boards, for the use of such learners of geography; whereby they may readily learn the situation of every kingdom, state or division. Price 7/6 each, in neat boxes'. The number '62' could refer to the catalogue number of this map, or perhaps the number of pieces required to complete the puzzle. The map shows the routes of several notable explorers, namely Quiros (1605), Davis (1686), Bering (1741), Anson (1740-42), Wallis, and importantly, 'the track of Cook'. Cook's circumnavigation is plotted, with his discoveries along the East coast of Australia and exploration into the Southern Ocean. One of the earliest published maps showing Cook's first voyage, and almost certainly the first jigsaw puzzle ... " --Bookseller's catalogue. Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) cartographic [1913?] eng Relief shown by shading. Base map in French with manuscript overwrite in English. The Australasian Antarctic Expedition was an Australian scientific team that explored part of Antarctica between 1911 and 1914. It was led by the Australian geologist Douglas Mawson, who was knighted for his achievements in leading the expedition. In 1910 he began to plan an expedition to chart the 2000-mile long coastline of Antarctica to the south of Australia. The Aurora departed for Macquarie Island on December 2, 1911, arriving on December 11 after surviving stormy weather during the crossing. A second vessel, the Toroa, followed with supplies and passengers. Departing Macquarie Island on December 23, the Aurora began exploring the coastal areas, during which they discovered and named King George V Land and Queen Mary Land. Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) of 1911-1914 was the first to establish an Antarctic radio link, at a time when radio technology was just over ten years old. The expedition established two stations, one at the main base of Cape Denison, Commonwealth Bay, and the other at Macquarie Island on what became known as Wireless Hill, wireless being the more often used term for radio in those days. There was also a receiving-only station established at the Western Base station on the Shackleton Ice Shelf. Queen Mary Coast is that portion of the coast of Antarctica lying between Cape Filchner at E 91° 54', and Cape Hordern, at E 100° 30'. It was discovered in February 1912 by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-14) under the leadership of Douglas Mawson, who named it for Mary of Teck, queen consort of George V.
