Abbott and Massie (12th Light Horse Regiment) were part of the cavalry charge at Beersheba. Aubrey Abbott stated his 'trade or calling' as "Mounted Constable" when enlisting on 29 March 1915 for service abroad. A clerk with NSW Police for six years, Abbott initially enlisted in August 1914 with Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force then taking possession of German New Guinea. Transferring to 12th L.H. Regt. in 1915, Abbott was commissioned at Gallipoli, and served in Egypt, Palestine, and Syria. Discharged a Captain in 1920, he later served as Minister for Home Affairs, and also as the Administrator of the Northern Territory [1937-1946]. Frank Raymond Massie joined A.I.F. on 23 November 1914; embarked for service abroad on 13 June 1915 with rank of Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant, 12th L.H. Regt. Lieut. Massie died of malaria on 15 October 1918, and is burried at Damascus British War Cemetery. Lieut. Massie's sketch shows the order of battle and route of A, B, and C Squadrons of 4th L.H. Regt.
