Sydney Ancher

Specialising in domestic architecture, Ancher foreshadowed the introduction of International style to Australia. After travelling extensively through Europe between 1930 and 1936, Ancher brought back to Australia elements of European Internationalism including flat roofs, and strong clear rectangular shapes, rendered in white.

In 1945 Ancher won the Sulman Award for his own house, Poyntzfield, at Maytone Avenue, Killara, which was a long, low, open-planned structure carefully orientated to fit the environment. Ancher established a solo practice in 1946 and later collaborated with his two assistants to set up Ancher, Mortlock and Murray in 1952. Following retirement from the practice in 1965, he devoted much time to architectural education for which he was awarded the RAIA Gold Medal in 1975.
