J.W. Lewin: Australia’s first free professional artist
5 May 2020
Richard Neville, Mitchell Librarian discusses the incredible career of John William Lewin (1770–1819) who arrived in Sydney in 1800. From working-class natural history illustrator to (at least in his own eyes) Australia’s first gentleman artist, Lewin's career provides a fascinating reflection on the motivations of the making of colonial art.
