In the Libraries features short articles and photos, giving an up-to-date snapshot of what’s happening in NSW public libraries.

Submit an article
Public library staff are invited to submit short articles for the In the Libraries enewsletter.
Word length guide: maximum 150 words and one image. Submissions are limited to one per library service for each edition.
Please read the submission guidelines below before submitting an article.

When writing your article include the basics: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. Include a headline that grabs the reader’s attention.
If you are writing about an event or program, consider that many libraries run similar events and programs. Tell us what makes your library’s event unique or successful. For example, provide a great photo, start with a quote from a participant, or tell us about the impact of this program on the wider community.
For longer articles, rather than retelling what happened on the day, tell us:
- What you did
- Why you did it: how does it fit the bigger picture, how does it meet a need or align with strategic plans?
- How you did it: did it require any problem-solving or innovative ideas? What were the challenges faced and how did you overcome them?
- Who you worked with: did you work with any new client groups or develop new partnerships?
- Promotion: how did you promote or communicate your program or service?
- What was the impact on the people involved or the local community?
- Were there any lessons learned or can you give any advice for other libraries doing something similar?
We would also like to hear about how you work with targeted client groups, such as:
- early childhood
- children
- youth
- local studies
- active retirees
- housebound / home library
- indigenous
- multicultural
- people living with disabilities
- homeless.
- Images
A good image can give your article instant appeal - vibrant colours, good lighting and interesting composition are worth considering.
Guidelines for publication
Images must be print quality (300 DPI or over 500 KB) and submitted in jpeg format.
Please do not submit collages i.e. one image that is a collage of multiple images. The images are often too small to see when compiled in collages. If we need any more images, we will contact you.
Save your image file with the name of your library or council and a brief description, e.g. Coffs Harbour_new pop-up library.
If you are providing images, you will need to have permission to reproduce the photo in print and online formats. By sending us your photos you are acknowledging that you have permission to reproduce them (including permission from anyone identifiable in the photo), and you are agreeing to them being used in State Library print and online publications such as In the Libraries, social media and websites. If you do not want photos to be used online please do not send them.
Please provide an image caption that would make sense to someone reading your article and who does not know what the image is about.
