Portrait of Dr. J.J. Streeter, ca. 1890-1900 / Catherine Elizabeth Streeter

Dr JJ Streeter c 1895

By Catherine Elizabeth Streeter

This portrait of Jonathan Julius Streeter, painted by his artist wife, Catherine, was probably painted from a photograph and created as a memorial picture after his sudden death in February 1880, two years after their marriage.

The couple met and married in Ballarat, Victoria, where they worked together at the Scarsdale State School. In an unusual reversal of professional status for the time, Catherine Streeter was the head teacher while her husband was first assistant.
