From 1795 until his death in 1808, Alexander Dalrymple was the first hydrographer to the Admiralty. In this role, he is credited with the development of the Admiralty Chart - nautical charts which are issued by what is now the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office. These charts are constantly reviewed and updated in order that a comprehensive and accurate map of the world's oceans is available. In his second year in office, Dalrymple brought together the existing charts and had them catalogued and reviewed, laying the groundwork for the publication of Admiralty Charts which continues until this day. This selection of Dalrymple's charts is from a collection of Admiralty charts held in the Mitchell Library which are available in digitised form on the Library's catalogue.
