For a brief period in the early 1840s, Maurice Felton was one of New South Wales’ most celebrated portrait artists. Focusing on his work in the State Library of NSW collection, Johanna Ellersdorfer will consider what these paintings can tell us about how Felton painted and his time as an artist in the colony.

Johanna Ellersdorfer is a paintings conservator who has worked on collections in Australia, Europe and the USA. She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney researching methods for writing about materiality.
