Students engage with original collection material to develop their understanding of Aboriginal rights and freedoms.

This experience features two distinct sessions that allow students to engage with collection material and historical sources that relate to Aboriginal rights and freedoms.  

In this two-hour program students will:  

  • Explore collection material on display relating to Aboriginal peoples and cultures during a guided library tour
  • Identify and analyse historical sources relating to the Freedom Rides and the 1967 Referendum 

Curriculum outcomes

History:

HT5-6 uses relevant evidence from sources to support historical narratives, explanations and analyses of the modern world and Australia  

HT5-8 selects and analyses a range of historical sources to locate information relevant to an historical inquiry 

Content:

The US civil rights movement and its influence on Australia (ACDSEH105).

Students:  

  • discuss the impact of the NSW Freedom Ride on the civil rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

The significance of the following for the civil rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples: 1962 right to vote federally; 1967 Referendum; Reconciliation; Mabo decision; Bringing Them Home Report (the Stolen Generations); the Apology (ACDSEH106)  

Students:  

  • outline the background, aims and significance of key developments in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' struggle for rights and freedoms
