Legal Deposit

Legal Deposit is a legal requirement for NSW publishers to deposit their publications with the Library

The New South Wales Copyright Act 1879  mandates that a copy of materials published in New South Wales be deposited by the publishers with the State Library of New South Wales, the University of Sydney Library and the Parliamentary Library of New South Wales. This requirement of publishers to deposit is called ‘legal deposit’.

If you are a NSW publisher, please send publications to:

Legal Deposit
State Library of New South Wales
Macquarie Street
Sydney NSW 2000

If you have an enquiry regarding legal deposit please contact the Library at legal.deposit@sl.nsw.gov.au or (02) 9273 1490.

Currently legal deposit does not extend to digital publications. However, the Library is interested in hearing from publishers about relevant digital material. Please contact the Library at the collections.library@sl.nsw.gov.au if you would like to deposit digital publications.

The Premier’s Memorandum No. 2000 - 15, Access To Published Information - Laws, Policy and Guidelines  requires that a copy of all New South Wales Government publications are deposited with the State Library of New South Wales. It also requires that New South Wales Government agencies notify the State Library of their digital publications.

If you want to deposit NSW Government publications, please send to:

Government Publications
State Library of New South Wales
Macquarie Street
Sydney NSW 2000

If you have an enquiry regarding the deposit of government publications or wish to notify the Library of digital government publications, please contact the Library at gov.dep@sl.nsw.gov.au

Legal deposit legislation operates nationally and in most states and territories. Further information regarding legal deposit in Australia is available here.
