Sign up for a Library card
Our Library is open to everyone. You can come in and use our express computers, read recent newspapers and magazines and get help from staff with finding information. When you sign up for one of our free Library cards you can also request books and other material from storage, use our eresources and book a study room. If you live in NSW, you can use most of our eresources from anywhere.
We are a reference library so we can't lend directly to you. However you can borrow some of our books through your public library. See our Lending Policy for more information.
We have three types of cards: a Blue card, a Special Collections card and an SL Public card.
Current New South Wales public library members can also register for State Library membership using their existing public library card under the SL public account initiative.
With a Blue card you can use:
- most of our collections
- eresources in the Library
- many of our eresources from anywhere (NSW residents only)
- books from other libraries
You can choose to collect your card at the Library or have it posted out. If you choose to collect your card you will need
to show us identification that has your current address.
Identification must be original.
Special Collections card
With a Special Collections card you can also use:
Visit the Library if you need a Special Collections card. You will need to bring two forms of identification; one that has your current address and photo and another with your signature (e.g. your drivers licence and credit card). In general, you have to be over the age of 18 to get a
Special Collections card. Identification must be original.
SL Public Membership Account
If you are a current New South Wales public library member you can register for membership of the State Library of New South Wales using your existing public library card as identification.
