View north from Craigend looking over Woolloomooloo and Port Jackson 1845
George Peacock made many views of the villas and vistas around Darlinghurst. In this painting, which exists in multiple versions, he is looking down the ridge of Darlinghurst and across to the North Shore. In the centre are the two flour mills of Thomas Hynde and Thomas Barker, situated near the villa of Craigend. Henrietta Villa on Point Piper can be seen on the left.
Hyndes Mill was built in 1825. It reached a height of 105 feet (32 metres) with sails 140 feet (42.6 metres) in length. The prominent position and size of the sails made the mill a central feature of many Woolloomooloo landscapes.
