A Man with a Rabbit c 1910
One of Australia’s most influential artists, George Washington Lambert was born in St Petersburg, Russia, and migrated with his widowed mother and sisters to Sydney in 1887. He attended Julian Ashton’s art classes and was awarded the first NSW Travelling Fellowship to Europe in 1900.
Lambert painted this portrait of the Baron de Neufville at Houlgate, the Baron’s London home, while carrying out his commission to paint a group portrait of the Baroness and her two children.
A Man with a Rabbit was exhibited in the Modern Society of Portrait Painters annual exhibition in London in 1910, titled ‘Le Baron de Neufville’.
