View above Rose Bay 1841

By Conrad Martens

This view of Sydney Harbour from the eastern side of Rose Bay, looking back to Point Piper, was a favourite with colonial artists such as Martens. Standing above New South Head Road (perhaps near present day Kambala School), the view takes in Henrietta Villa on Point Piper, and Shark Island. The spire of St James, on Macquarie Street, pokes above the headland.

The painting was a homage to the beauty of the harbour. While Martens was true to its topography he has embellished the harbour with a lush romanticism. Governor Gipps purchased the work in 1841.
