Leaf-light’s tagline is a story about caring for each other, and it is the mantra that carries this gorgeous graphic novel. Miri’s treehouse sanctuary is turned upside down when she begins to take care of a newly hatched emu named Barramul. Miri’s blended family and friends all join in the fun of looking after Barramul, but they cannot prepare Miri for her dilemma when Barramul grows up, and she has to say goodbye. This is a love letter to nature, and how people can have an authentic mutual relationship with it. Leaf-light follows in the footsteps of Trace Balla’s previous books, where the bush surroundings become its own character, alive and breathing alongside humans. It is an intriguing and unique approach to storytelling that creates a very special experience.

Readers are taken along for a ride to the bushlands, where there is much to take in and explore, highlighted by the double-spread detailed illustrations with labelled fauna and flora. These snippets of non-fiction are welcomed in between funny and touching scenes, allowing for pause and reflection. But readers will also pore over the details without labels as the characters’ quirks appear through the gentle illustrations and witty dialogue. At the heart of this story is an everlasting bond between Miri and her baby emu companion, Barramul, and with an abundance of delicate care Balla ensures that they both will leave an impression on readers’ hearts.
