Picasso and the Greatest Show on Earth is an exquisitely crafted story about Frances, a sensitive young girl navigating an unsettled life, a traumatic secret and a brand-new puppy named Picasso. The assured, writerly brushstrokes of luscious language and sometimes surprising, but always perfect, metaphors paint a truly vivid world, deep with emotion and heartfelt humour. The real highlight is the enduring friendship that develops between Frances and the moody, guarded Kit. The two come together through a love of painting, as they teach each other about how to express themselves through art.

Told from the unique viewpoint of a narrator with a candid voice and fresh perspective to savour, this memorable children's novel is a touching exploration of growing up and the complexities and comforts of families and friendships. Somewhat like a painter, Anna Fienberg takes her time setting up some powerful scenes, always finding the right balance between light and darkness. The book never strays into romance or the usual teen drama, instead treading its own path of two souls trying to find their place in the world. A beautiful, life-affirming masterpiece, composed of wonderful little details which ultimately combine to reveal a breathtaking grander picture.
