Kathleen Gillett Earl

Kathleen Gillett Earl, Log 11: Tahiti to Auckland, September–November 1948

By Jack Earl

These beautifully illustrated logbooks record a detailed account of the circumnavigation of the world by the deep-sea cruising yacht Kathleen Gillett — only the second time this was achieved under the Australian flag. The logs were the personal project of marine artist and sailor Jack Earl, who captained the voyage. Setting out with his crew of four from Sydney Harbour in June 1947, Earl created the logs so he could share the adventures of the 18-month journey with his young family back home in Sydney. They became an extended love letter to his wife, the original Kathleen for whom the yacht was named.
