Sunrise over South Head, watched by two figures contemplating the Pacific, is an unusually romantic depiction of this well-known Sydney beauty spot. The Heads were a favourite destination for local tourists, the point of entry and exit to the colony, and symbolic of its separation from Europe.

Perhaps this vision by convict artist George Peacock documents his own sense of exile from England. Back in England he had been a landscape painter but was convicted for forgery and transported to Sydney.
