Three men sit cross-legged on the grass under a sprawling tree, boomerangs scattered on the ground.

Assen Timbery, Aboriginal boomerang maker, La Perouse 1959

By Don McPhedran

La Perouse was at the end of the tramline — a popular, sunny destination for day-trippers from Sydney. The local Aboriginal community gave boomerang throwing demonstrations for visitors and sold hand-crafted boomerangs as souvenirs. The Timbery family was well-known for their boomerang making and throwing skills.
