Series 93: Letters received by Sarah Sophia Banks from Joseph Banks, 1766, 1773-1774, 1779

Provenance note

The documents in this series were previously located at ML A 80 -2. They were purchased in 1884 from Lord Brabourne by Sir Saul Samuel, the Agent-General for New South Wales and were transferred to the Mitchell Library in 1910. They were part of the accession which became known as the Brabourne collection.

Some of the letters in this series include annotations in the hand of Sarah Sophia Banks.

Background note

Sir Joseph Banks and his only sibling, Sarah Sophia, remained close throughout their lives. Sarah, never having married, lived with Banks and his wife, Lady Dorothea, until her death in 1818.
