2024 Fellows announced

The State Library welcomed its newest research fellow, Nancy Cushing, at the 4th Biennial Coral Thomas Lecture last night.  

Nancy was awarded the prestigious $110,000 Coral Thomas Fellowship for her fascinating project ‘Beauty and the Beasts’, which will examine a history of animals in Sydney.  

This year the Library has awarded a total of $236,000 in fellowships, helping to support some outstanding research through the collection.  

The 2024 Fellows are: 

Coral Thomas Fellow — Associate Professor Nancy Cushing for ‘Beauty and the Beasts: A History of Animals in Sydney’. 

CH Currey Fellowship — Dr Michael Bennett for ‘Empowering Dharriwaa Elders: Towards an Aboriginal History of Walgett’ 

Australian Religious History Fellowship — Dr Matthew Grubits for ‘Two Young Clergymen: Francis Russell and Peter Beamish in NSW’ 

Ross Steele AM Fellowship — Deborah Beck for ‘Exposed and Composed: Artists’ Models in Australia’ 

Merewether Fellowship — Associate Professor Adele Wessell for ‘A Natural-Cultural History of the Richmond River: 1828-1958’ 

David Scott Mitchell Fellowship — Dr Nicholas Hoare for ‘Australia’s Voice of the Pacific: A History of the Pacific Islands Monthly, 1930–2000’ 

Dr AM Hertzberg AO Fellowship — Dr Caitlin D’Gluyas for ‘Archival Archaeology: A Spatial Reading of People and Things in Early Convict Parramatta’ 

Nancy Keesing Fellowship — Dr Chi Chi Huang for ‘Integrating Chinese Medicine into Australian Public Health’ 

Applications for all Fellowships for 2025 will open on Monday 13 May 2024.
